'Oh boy do I really need to enter this insane grown-up world' a.k.a. Anne updates!

I'm so EFFIN tired, physically and mentally, I always knew I was going to have a hard carreer when I chose to study Engineering but I swear I didn't know it was THIS hard until now LOL

The work itself is pretty nice and the office is near my house, like 30 mins. But the responsabilty is quite huge and there are the constant trips to anywhere in Brazil and South America and hopefully to the whole world hahaha
I never sleep well when I'm not at home, so I've been barely sleeping this month. I was informed that now things will get a little easier, at least until March, when new trips await me.

While I'm in the hotel rooms, I watch DVDs in my portable DVD player that is my true and loyal friend hehe. Which DVDs are in my luggages, you may wonder. I answer you promptly: AFI's 'I heard a Voice', Siam Shade's V8 and V9 and Naruto's 1st, 2nd and 3rd seasons. I'm always taking some vegan/vegetarian cookies and other meals so I can survive away from my own kitchen.

My love life is doing pretty fine, it seems the distance makes guys more in love? I suppose LOL As for myself, I really can't say if it works the same way. Honestly I don't even have time to think about me being in love or not.

Concerning my other plans and dreams: I'll be travelling to Japan SOON. If not this year, in 2009 for sure. That's one of my main goals in my whole life.
And some other good news are: Jade has answered to one of my brazilian mates that Brazil is one of the countries that they will tour!! OMG.
I really need to work my ass off and save money to all that. Japan's trip, AFI's brazilian tour...And Siam Shade's new CD and DVD.

However, at the same time, I miss my old college days when I was planning to live what I'm living now, except I didn't think I would be missing exaclty the time I was wasting thinking of my future...that's not my future anymore. Wanna a piece of advice? Don't even waste a second thinking about your 'future'. It doesn't exist. Things will always be different.

So, my good and dear Buzznet friends: I've truly missed you all.

And please , don't forget me!

To a special friend

I just felt that I should teletransport me and hug Helen right now, but if I had this power( or jutsu haha) many other people all over the world would be hugged like ALL the time LOL.

In this particular time I wish I could hug Helen with all my love and say 'thank you for everything'. I can't, and writing this journal is the only thing that's left for me to do. Helen dearest, you brought a big smile to my face, not only today( and you know why haha) but from the very first day I read your journal and I really saw we can diverge sometimes and still be great friends. It made me so happy to become your friend on that day. I could really see you were special and within some months you became one of my best friends also in my real life. It doesn't really matter how far we're from each other although I wish we weren't. We share secrets that we wouldn't share with many people we get to meet and see everyday. We share the same passion towards the same subjetcs and that's what a real friendship is based on.

Once I also don't have ability with words, I decided I should write down a Siam Shade song that would express my feelings for you and how important your friendship is to me. It is translated direclty from Japanese:

Disclaimer:
I told you guys I was going to write another journal about it.
Here it is.

First of all, I'd like to inform you that I always loved animes but honestly , since I got into college, I didn't have much time to watch full seasons. The last time I watched an anime completely, it was with Rurouni Kenshin( it's called 'Samurai X' in Brazil). It was back in 2001. And it was the time I also heard about Siam Shade, with their historical theme '1/3 Junjou na Kanjou'. But I didn't have internet back then and I didn't know more about the band other than that specifically great song. Last year, internet came to my house( finally) and you guys know that since then, I came to Buzznet to share my A.F.I. findings with other fans, as well as meet some GREAT fans out there that also has the generosity in their veins. LOL
So...this prelude will only mean that I decided to write about some other things apart from A.F.I. because I felt like doing. Simple.

Let me talk about Siam Shade: unfortunally they disbanded in 2002. Reasons are that they've agreed once they played at the Budokan, they wouldn't have anything else to achieve. So they played at the Budokan twice and the band is gone. Honestly, I understand what they meant. It's much better to stop when you're on top. ( sorry for the poor rhyme, totally unintended) . Now they can make reunion shows( like the one they did last November 18th, in honour of their deceased producer)and they will still rule and full Budokan. Like one of my friends have stated, the band has gone and the legend has begun. Because they knew the right time to stop. If there's no more passion, why still do it?

The band members are still friends to each other, there was no fight, and they're having their personal projects. And like I said, they can still revive Siam Shade for 1 night.
They're really loved in Brazil btw. Many people traveled to Japan only for this one night concert in November. I couldn't for many reasons, specially money reasons LOL. If I had money, to begin with, I wouldn't even be studying hahahaha.

So yeah: Siam Shade will be forever worshiped and loved. And we can always say that they gave their best from the very beggining in 1993 until their glorious end in 2002. They've always produced the best albuns and the best songs. When the passion is over, there's no reason in going on anymore.
My journals in Buzznet are barely read by my brazilian mates, but anyway, if any of you read this one, please do contact me so we can talk more about Siam Shade and even exchange materials of the band.

I've missed you all guys!! Can't believe my nasty internet abandoned me for almost a week. I tried to log in at a web cafe yesterday but I couldn't write anything for there was this stupid girl right by my side willing to read everything, although I'm not sure she could understand English.
I didn't go to my bf's house this weekend for it was my dad's birthday and then 5 days without Buzznet and Internet almost made me go crazy...
I've got some cools updates but I just need my internet connection not to vanish again. Maybe it was the rain, it's been raining again since saturday.
So yeah I'll catch up with you all asap.

AFI 2001 Interview

I'm trying to post the most interesting AFI interviews I've got here...Here's another one.

AFI Interview 3/13/01

C: Okay, well I would like to know why you chose to be vegan, or straight-edge, or whatever it is that you claim.

D: Well some people would consider me to be vegan and some people wouldn't consider me to be vegan. I don't consume any animal products with the exception of honey and refined sugar. The title is unimportant to me, that's what I believe in. I don't consume any animal products for two reasons: One, the dietary reason, for my health. I really believe that it is much healthier to have a diet that consists solely of non-animal products. And then also because I just feel bad for the animals. And as far as my sXe lifestyle goes, which I completely separate from my diet, I just really never found drug use appealing, I never found the culture that surrounds it appealing. It never attracted me. And I was always really interested in, you know, alternative music: punk rock, hardcore, metal and all that stuff. But it seemed that most of the people involved with that at the time were all so very inelastic. And then I discovered Minor Threat and Dag Nasty, and then I realized there were people out there that believed the same things I did, and had the same interests that I did, and they called themselves straightedge. So from that point on, I became part of that movement.

C: Is there any good books you've been reading?

D: Yeah, let's see, I just read Merrick, the new Anne Rice novel, which was great-It's part of the Vampire Chronicles. Lestat is in it, and Louie and David are all in it for the first time in a while. So that was really good. I'm just for the first time finishing the Trilogy of the Rings; I'm just working on the third part of that right now. I never read that when I was younger. So I've been reading those. That's what I'm reading right now.

C: Have you ever read any Poppy Z. Brite books?

D: I've never read any of her stuff, is it good?

C: I think it's good, I was wondering because the Lost Souls is the song title-

D: Right, that's completely coincidental. I actually was unfamiliar with that novel until after I titled the song. And then there was the movie-

C: Oh yeah, the movie sucked.

D: It was horrible.

C: Awful!

D: Horrible! Is her writing any good?

C: Well, I've read...every one of her books, but it may be because I'm insane.

D: Do you like it?

C: Yeah I like it; there are a few things I would change.

D: It's not... cheesy at all?

C: I don't think you'd find it cheesy.

D: Okay, I've never read any of it at all.

C: Yeah, I know, I think it is pretty good.

D: Yeah, actually I wanted to check some of her stuff out. I've been meaning to. Which one was your favorite one?

C: Probably Lost Souls. That's her first one.

D: Okay, I'll check that out.

C: Okay, so do any of you guys draw?

D: I certainly don't, I couldn't draw anything to save my life.

Some guy that I didn't recognize: What are you talking about? Bunnies!

D: Oh yeah, except for bunnies, and other small furry creatures. No, I don't think any of us draw. No.

C: Are any of you superstitious?

D: Yeah, I guess so, I am… I can't speak for anybody else. But for some things… anything specific? Yeah, I'm slightly superstitious.

C: Not like black cats or...

D: I don't think black cats are bad luck.

C: Yeah, I don't think so at all.

D: I do knock wood, I'll throw salt over my shoulder, I believe in 'break a leg' as opposed to have a good show.

C: Is Days of the Phoenix going to be a single?

D: It was, it was already.

C: I guess I totally missed that.

D: Well it depends where you live. It was a single for people who lived in Northern California and Salt Lake City, only a couple of radio stations picked it up.

C: Ohh, no no no, not like that, I mean like a new CD.

D: Oh like a single-single?

C: Yeah, like a single-single.

D: In the U.K. it is.

C: Oh, is it ever going to come here?

D: No.

C: Can we expect a new E.P?

D: No. We're going to be doing a DVD, and that'll be our next release before we release another full-length album.

C: Will you put it on VHS?

D: Probably, yeah. I think we would put it on VHS. I don't have a DVD player, so I wouldn't be able to watch it [laughter].

C: What was one of the most memorable experiences on tour with Rancid and the Distillers?

[Adam walks in]

D: Let's see, the Salt Lake City show, where we played outside in about...what was it? Twenty degrees outside in Salt Lake, Adam?

A: Yeah, cold.

D: Yeah, freezing, freezing cold whether. Coldest, coldest outdoor show we've ever played.

A: They have these big heaters.

D: Yeah, heaters.

C: Wee. Fun.

D: That's all you're going to say Adam?

A: Oh, I thought you had already explained it.

D: Oh, no.

A: They have these big, like powerful, like, generator, power-fire-hot air blowers.

D: And then the power cut out during our set, at least three times, might have been four.

C: Okay, what are you're guys' favorite movies? Any good movies you've seen recently?

D: All-time or current?

C: Either.

D: We just saw "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" That was really good. We saw “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.

[At this point, a guy walks in and asks if he can have an interview for his zine soon, and we all get diverted.]

D: Sorry, that was so rude!

A: So rude! That's so lame. [Imitating that kid] Uhhhhh!

D: Yeah, like even after he pointed out we were doing an interview. But, those are good movies. What other recent movies...I think those two were the better. Adam, have you seen anything that was really good?

A: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. I liked it a lot.

D: I saw "Happiness" for the first time in the past year. I loved that movie. It was great. Oh, I just saw “Shadow of the Vampire”, which was really, really good.

C: This is probably a hard question, but what do you appreciate most from your fans?

D: The dedication and the loyalty. I mean, most of our fans seem to take such a strong interest in us. They go out of their way to learn about the band, and dig in to our lyrics and our work. They really, really care about us. They often know more about what were doing than I know. A lot of times, kids will tell me, "Oh, you guys are playing in this city on this day." I go "Oh, I don't know that." And, I mean, different shows we play, I know people will drive, and fly and come huge distances to see us.

C: Yeah, I drove four or five hours to see you guys with Rancid and the Distillers.

D: Exactly, and it's great. I don't think a lot of bands have that. And our fans grow with us. Each of our albums are completely different from one another, and luckily we have fans that appreciate that, rather than saying "Oh, this isn't exactly like the last album. I don't understand it, I can't listen to it." We seem to have really intelligent, appreciative, loyal fans. It's awesome. We really have some of the best fans. For real.

[Smith tells me I have five more minutes]

C: Five minutes? Okay. If you could have dinner with anyone alive, dead, real, unreal, who would it be?

D: Wow, I'd really like to meet Tim Burton. Tim Burton would definitely be one of the people. I'd like to meet him. And he's real and alive.

Smith [into megaphone]: Tim Burton. Tim Burton.

C: What are Jade and Hunter chanting in the background of Wester?

D: Jade?

J: I don't think Hunter's chanting anything in that part, but me, and Dave, and Lars and Fritch [laughter] are chanting "One world away. We were just one world away. Quiet rapture let us stay one world away."

D: Isn't it silent? Silent rapture? Well, something like that.

A: Is it? I never know. I just kind of mumble that part. [He begins to sing] "One world away. We were just one world away. Bluuebleeeh let us stay, One world away."

D: It's silent. I think it's silent.

Smith [into megaphone]: Silent rapture let us stay!

C: I have like two more questions.

D: You can ask all the questions.

C: Really?

D: Really.

C: If you could play a show anywhere, where would it be and why?

D: Anywhere? I don't know… I'm really lucky to play most of the cities I've ever wanted to play. I would really like to play Tokyo again, just because I would like to go to Japan again. Shows in Japan were great. I would just love to play there again.

C: Favorite cartoon characters or comics?

D: Cartoon characters: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, the old Warner Brothers cartoons are probably my favorites. Those are my favorite cartoons. Comic book characters: All the Jhonen Vasquez creations: Squee, Johnny-

Guy I don't know [into megaphone]: HAGAR THE HORRIBLE!!! [laughter from all]

D: Well yes, Hagar is one...

Guy I don't know without his trusty megaphone: Cookie Monster? Cookie monster!

Smith: Dave you have to warm up now…

D: Can I finish one more question?

C: If the four of you were stranded on a desert island and you had to resort to cannibalism, who would you eat first? [laughter]

D: Can I eat like nuts and berries and stuff?

C: It's a desert Island, there aren't any nuts or berries.

D: Oh so it's like sand or people. Guy I don't know: They only have like tropical fruits! Papayas and guavas. [laughter]

D: So basically you want me to eat one of my band mates, and you just expect me to answer that question?

C: Well that or one of their parts, yeah.

D: Probably Adam.

C: Why Adam?

D: Well he's a drummer, so he's all lean, if you like lean meat. [laughter]

A: Tender!

Guy I don't know: Well you wouldn't wanna get fat on a desert island.

What happened to the original AFI members, Mark and Geoff?

Davey "Um, I believe Mark is currently in Southern California, going to school."
Adam "He's studying math at engineering school."
Jade "And Geoff is currently playing bass for Tiger Army- a great band on Hellcat Records.

Why hasn't AFI been to Australia, and if they ever tour our fine shores, can they buy me a beer?
-Kira Batchelor, Nambucca Heads, New South Wales, Australia.
Davey "Um, no! We won't buy you a beer. Heh heh heh!"
Jade "We tried to get to Australia a bunch of time(sic), it always falls through, there's something keeping us away. Some, like, external force preventing us from going there.
Davey "Well the first force that's keeping us from there is that they really couldn't get our records over there for a long time. So for the last eight or nine years there's really been no promoter interested in getting us over there.
Hammer "So Australia thinks you're shit?"
Davey "Well, I don't think it's that. We meet Australian kids that like us all the time, we met some last night that asked us why we haven't been to Australia. We really want to. Recently we've had two opportunites to go there but they've both fallen through. But we will do our best."
Hammer "So why won't you buy Kira a beer?"
Davey "Because beer is poison- and they can buy their own beer if they want to do that to themselves."

Will there be a European AFI tour along with "Sing the Sorrow"? If so, what bands will be joining you?

Hammer "Is that as much information as we're going to get on the age front?"
Davey "Oh, I'm 27-years-old."

Davey, some of your lyrics are the most intense I've ever heard. Where do you get your inspiration from?
-Karianne Mathiesen, Potters Bar, Herts.
Davey "Um, I take inspiration from all sorts of different artists- whether those artists be in music or literature or fine arts or films. I really like a lot of the current pop culture painters. I'm a fan of Michael Hussar, Camille Rose Garcia, Daniel Martin Diaz and Mathew Gordon."

Had Davey's monster in his neck surfaced recently? And what's his name?

Davey "He doesn't have a name. He's gone. Forever."
Hammer "Would you care to elaborate as to what the monster in the neck actually was?"
Davey "It's just gone. Yeah it's just gone. It's gone."
Hammer "I'm getting the distinct impression that you really don't want to talk about the monster in your neck."
Davey "Yeah."

In your career you've evolved from singing about monster trucks and cereal to things of a much darker nature. Would you encourage the fans you make with the new album to check out your old songs or are they a bit embarassing for you?
-Jamie Willcocks, Gosport, Hampshire.
Hunter "Heh heh heh. That's a good question."
Adam "Embarrassed? In a way. The evolution of the band is interesting I think. That first record was made when we were 15 years old."
Hammer "You could, of course, written about the darker side of monster trucks and cereal..."
Davey "If you really want to be accurate it was mini-trucks, not monster trucks. Probably most people don't know what a mini-truck is..."
Jade "It's kinda a Latin American thing."
Hunter "They're like regular trucks that are lowered, souped-up, usually with hydraulics."
Adam "And usually driven by the jocks or cowboys that would yell at you while you were skating."

I just wanted to know, did you guys have a nightmare before Christmas?
-Simone Haynes, Aylesford, Kent.
Hunter "Yes! I had a nightmare where we were on this band bus on tour. I had been sleeping and I was woken up because ahead of us in the distance there was some sort of giant explosion and the ground was rippling and there was a wave of earth coming towards us and we were all going to die."

Is there a chance of any limited edition EP's to accompany "Sing the Sorrow"?

Jade "Not that I'm aware of. I suppose there's always a chance but there's no plans."
Adam "There's a limited edition special packaging of the new album though. I don't really know but it'll be this really nice packaging with extra bonus stuff. So look out."

What was the last tattoo that you got done, and are there anymore planned?

Davey "Jade and I both recently got tattooed as a matter of fact."
(Jade starts showing off the tattoo on his arm)
Hammer "It's a cartoony heart with surgical stitching all over it, supported by sort of maggot angels. Very nice."
Davey "I've got a V&V Dark Angel tattoo on the back of my calf and I plan- this tattoo has been in the works for about five years- to get "Love Will Tear Us Apart" tattooed across my lower belly."
Hammer "Your belly? You better make sure you're at your slimmest then, otherwise you'll get stretch marks."
Davey "Well it's my lower belly so any gut will just sort of sag over and hide it."
Adam "It's been a long, long time but I've got a little rabbit on my arm."
Hammer "Doesn't that mean you're a prostitute? If you've got a rabbit on your arm?"
Davey "Really!?"
Jade "Yeah, I heard that too!"
Hunter "I haven't been tattooed in a long time. I think the last time was my chest, a big skull with wings. I'm definitely due. Probably some traditional Japanese work."

I was gobsmacked when I found out Davey wanted "Hollow Hills" played at his funeral- I had the same idea! So what is your favorite Bauhaus album?
-Melissa Harris, Swindon.
Adam "Gobsmacked?"
Hunter "I like 'Gobsmacked'. Wasn't that one of their earlier albums?"
Davey "Their live album. That and 'Mask' were the first two that I got into."

What do you feel it is about you as a band that makes you stand out from the other punk outfits?
-Merlin Alderslade, Potten End, Hertfordshire.
Davey "His name's Merlin?"
Hammer "Yeah, he's probably a witch."
Davey "Probably not being a punk rock band."

I saw AFI when they supported The Offspring on their European tour, and I've been a huge fan ever since. So I was wondering what it was like going from being a support band to having a support band?

Davey "Kirk Forsyth? These are great names!"
Hammer "Do you 'have' many support bands?"
Davey "Yeah, we do. It's not really strange. Since we've been touring we've experienced headlining to five people and supporting major bands. We enjoy doing both."
Hammer "So when you get a support band do you make sure that their sound it fucked up so they don't blow you off?"
Jade "No, we make sure they get the drum riser and the full sound, full lights- whatever they need."
Hunter "They're usually our friends too so that wouldn't be very cool."

How long has it been since you have come home to Ukiah?

Hammer "That's your home town, isn't it? Were you in the boyscouts there?"
Jade "I was."
Adam "I was a weeblow."
Hammer "You were a what?"
Adam "It was for one year- it's a rank of cub scout."
Jade "We all blow."
Davey "I blow! I think we were all in Ukiah around Xmas because all our families live there, apart from Hunter."
Hammer "Do you think that if space aliens landed in Ukiah they'd get their green asses kicked?"
Davey "Yeah. They'd probably get shot and hung out on a rail."
Hammer "I don't want to be rude but you guys are a bunch of weirdo freaks. Do the locals abuse you in the street in Ukiah?"
Davey "The time I went back before last I got whistled at by some hicks in a truck. I was flattered buy I'm not sure if they were really interested."

Have any of AFI had any supernatural experiences?

Jade "I have but it's kind of a long story so if that guy wants to find me at a show I'll tell him."

Is Davey still straight?

Davey "Yeah,but you don't know what he means though."
Hammer "I think he means straight-edge."
Davey "You're absolutely right! I thought that with the thing about blowing earlier you might have got confused. Yes, I am still. I abstain from all narcotics and am in opposition to the use of narcotics."

What song do you guys like to play the most and why?

Davey "One of my favorites is 'Ever and a Day'.
Hunter "I like 'Dancing Through Sunday'.
Jade "I think the ones where the audience gets most involved are probably the best."

How much money has Davey spent on tattoos?

Davey "Oh, I have no idea! Lots!"

I heard that Davey had a small part in a movie. I was just wondering what the name of it was?

Davey "Yeah! Ha ha ha. Very small part! t's called Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore. I play a male groupie and I get about three lines."

When you tour Europe, will you come to Ireland at any stage?

Jade "I hope so! We never get to go to Ireland. We come to the UK all the time but we never make it to Ireland. Hopefully. We'll try."

Davey, how do you respond to the rumours circulating that you are a homosexual? Is there any truth to these?

Davey "How do I respond? (pause) Ecstatically! Fabulously!"

What were the other alternate album titles you came up with for the new record?
-Phill Jinks, Stoke-on-Trent
Davey "Phill Jinks! These are really good names! I don't think we had alternatives. Sorry,Phil."

Is there anything you have done in the past 10 years of being in a band that you now regret doing?

Davey "No."
Hammer "That was a bit quick! We've got 10 years to review here!"
Davey "Ok, in the last 10 years, yes. But nothing to do with the band. Nor anything I'm willing to talk about."
Adam "We did a really crappy cover of a Police song once. 'Man in a Suitcase'- it's our one and only ska moment and I'm ashamed of it."
